Sonic Adventure 2 Battle "Review"

About six months ago, I decided to re-live some childhood memories and buy Sonic Adventure 2 Battle online from Ebay. Although as a child I was never allowed to have electronic games, I remember watching my primary school best friend play.

The game was released by GameCube in 2001 and according to the Boyfriend was the last really good Sonic the Hedgehog game. It can be run on a Wii game system, but you have to have a GameCube controller and a memory card to play, as we discovered on the night it arrived.

Desperate to play, we rushed over to Mt. L. (a 20 minute drive) to borrow the necessary equipment and rushed back, knocking an old lady over. Okay, so it's all true except for the part about the old duck.

Anyway, as we watched the opening scene (I won't spoil the oh-so-wonderful typical Japanese plot for you), we were struck by how pointy and angular the graphics were. Now that we've nearly passed the game we've come to even be impressed by the quality of the graphics, considering that this was developed ten years ago.

In this game you get to play the Good and the Dark characters including Sonic, Tails (Miles Prower), Knuckles, Shadow, Dr. Eggman and Rouge the Bat.

In addition to the main storyline there is a side attraction within the game called 'Chao World'. Inside the garden found there, you can nourish and play with (or abuse and neglect) virtual pets called Chao. In each stage of the main game-play there are animals and crystals hidden which you can collect. If you feed these to your Chao it will take on animal appearance and abilities for the former and just abilities for the latter. If you nourish the Chao with a Dark character it will become evil and vice versa for the Good characters.

I also enjoy the really catchy music present in the different scenes (I wonder whether one could get a CD of this online)

1 Googleplex later: Oh yes you can!

This is the song from one of the first stages.

There are hours of gameplay so if you are thinking of indulging in something entertaining and non-violent I suggest that this is the game for you.
